Australia’s Solar Battery Rebates by State and Federal
Last Update: 07 May 2025
Solar energy has become an essential part of the Australian energy landscape, and many homeowners are looking into solar battery storage to maximise their energy savings and independence. Adding a solar battery to your system allows you to store excess solar energy, use it at night, and protect your home from rising energy costs. Various solar battery rebates and incentives are available across Australia to support this shift.
In this guide, we’ll cover all you need to know about solar battery rebates and incentives in each Australian state, helping you understand the financial benefits and options available to reduce the cost of your solar battery system.
Federal Battery Rebates
The Australian Government supports renewable energy adoption through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). Under this scheme, installing eligible solar panel systems can earn Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which can be sold to reduce installation costs. While STCs primarily apply to solar panels, they indirectly lower the overall expense when combined with battery storage.
Cheaper Home Batteries Program (starting 1 July 2025)
the Australian government has announced a massive $2.3 billion incentive (rebate) to make home battery storage more affordable. The newly announced program aims to cut the cost of installing a typical home battery by around 30%, which could mean savings of up to $4,000 (typical 11.5 kWh battery) for many Aussie households. In 2025, the maximum available subsidy is approximately $372 per usable kWh of battery storage. This amount will gradually decrease each year until the scheme ends in 2030. The structure is similar to the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) currently used for solar systems.
The federal rebate can be combined with existing state and territory battery incentives in NSW, WA, and the NT. The rebate is available to homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities.
Under the new incentive, businesses installing batteries between 5kWh and 50kWh may be eligible for rebates of up to $18,500. The program would be delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which already provides rooftop solar subsidies.
Batteries installed before July 1, 2025, can still qualify for the rebate — as long as they are not switched on until the program officially begins.
Victoria (VIC) Battery Rebates
Solar Battery Loan
As of November 1, 2024, Victoria provides interest-free loans for solar battery installations. Eligible households can access loans to cover the cost of a solar battery system, making energy storage more affordable. Homeowners can apply for an interest-free loan of up to $8,800. The loan must be repaid over four years.
New South Wales (NSW) Battery Rebates
Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS)
From November 1, 2024, NSW offers incentives ranging from $1,600 to $2,400 off the upfront installation cost of a household battery for homes and businesses with existing solar systems. An additional $250 to $400 incentive is available for connecting the battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
Queensland (QLD) Battery Rebates
Queensland doesn’t have any rebates right now. The Queensland Battery Booster program closed on May 8, 2024, and rebates are no longer available.
South Australia (SA) Battery Rebates
South Australia (SA) is not currently offering a battery rebate. The Home Battery Scheme is closed, and new applications are not being accepted.
But residents of the City of Adelaide can still access the Sustainability Incentives Scheme, which offers rebates of up to 50% off the cost of a home battery system, capped at $2,000.
Western Australia (WA) Battery Rebates
The WA Residential Battery Scheme (Launching Soon!)
Western Australia is launching a substantial Residential Battery Scheme starting on or before 1 July 2025, offering up to 20,000 rebates to support households in adopting battery storage systems. Under this program:
- Synergy customers (primarily in Perth and the South West) can receive a rebate of $500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), up to a maximum of $5,000 for a 10 kWh battery.
- Horizon Power customers (serving regional and remote areas) are eligible for $750 per kWh, up to $7,500 for a 10 kWh battery.
Tasmania (TAS) Battery Rebates
Energy Saver Loan Scheme
Under the Energy Saver Loan scheme, Tasmanian residents can access interest-free loans of up to $10,000 to help with a range of energy-efficient investments, including home solar battery storage. The loans require fortnightly or monthly repayments over a one to three year term.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Battery Rebates
Sustainable Household Scheme
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has no battery rebate program. However, it does offer zero-interest loans through the Sustainable Household Scheme to help pay for energy-efficient upgrades. The scheme offers loans of up to $15,000 for energy-efficient upgrades, including rooftop solar panels and household battery storage systems.
Northern Territory (NT) Battery Rebates
Home and Business Battery Scheme
This scheme provides a grant of $400 per kilowatt-hour, up to a maximum of $12,000, for eligible battery systems. The grant is available for battery systems that are on the Clean Energy Council’s approved battery list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I apply for a solar battery rebate?
A: The process varies by state, but typically involves choosing an approved installer, getting a quote, and submitting an application through a government website or program portal.
Q: Can I receive multiple rebates for installing a solar battery?
A: Generally, you can combine federal incentives with state or territory rebates. However, it's essential to review the specific terms of each program to ensure compatibility.
Q: Do I need to have an existing solar panel system to qualify for battery rebates?
A: Many programs require an existing solar panel system. However, some schemes may allow concurrent installation of both solar panels and batteries. Check the specific eligibility criteria of the rebate program in your area.
Q: How do I find an accredited installer for my solar battery system?
A: Accredited installers are typically listed on the websites of the relevant rebate programs or through organizations like the Clean Energy Council. You can also fill out the form below, and we’ll help guide you through the rebate process.
Q: Are rebates available for businesses or just homeowners?
A: Yes, several state and federal programs also offer rebates or incentives for commercial and small business battery installations.
